Additional liens filed against beef processing plant

Northern Beef Packers received liens from two more businesses Tuesday for unpaid work. The beef processing plant has now received 15 liens, claiming more than $13 million in unpaid work. 

The two recent liens were filed by Iowa-based Structural Engineers and Jensen Rock and Sand. Other companies and mechanics with potential unpaid work claims have until the end of the month to file the liens, according to the judge assigned to the case.

Alliant makes plans to buyback debt, potentially resolve lawsuit

Alliant Energy Corporation is making arrangements to end an ongoing federal lawsuit with U.S. Bank. A spokesperson for the Wisconsing energy company, which has electric and natural gas utilities in Iowa, the company plans to buy back debt that was used to finance a previous investment in McLeodUSA.

The buyback would help Alliant consolidate its business, which has shrunk in the past few years as the company has mostly divested of its international assets. The consolidation would further allow Alliant to focus on its operations in Wisconsin and Iowa.

iPCS files transactions lawsuit against Sprint

iPCS, Incorporated filed a complaint against Sprint Nextel Corporation Sept. 10. The complaint concerned three of its subsidiaries, which alleged that Sprint's recent acquisitions were the result of uncompetitive practices, a potential future break of a contract agreemtn, and illegal competitive practices against the subsidiaries that hold an agreement with Spring.

The three complaints essentially seek to enforce iPCS Affiliates' Agreements with Sprint. The three subsidiaries are asking for an injunction against Sprint until the company complies with the terms of the agreements.

Agrium attempt to acquire competitor

North America's third-largest fertilizer producer said it could raise as much as $1 billion in an attempt to acquire a competitor. Agrium Inc. said it is currently making a bid for acquisition of CF Industries Inc.

Agrium filed its registration Thursday, affirming its commitment to take over its competitor. Despite Agrium's attempt, CF Industries so far has resisted the takeover and has tried to revive some of its older divisions.

Wells Fargo modifies more than 30,000 home loans

Wells Fargo & Co. completed 33,172 trial and final modifications of home loans in the month of August. The completion represents a 64-percent increase for the month as part of the Home Affordable Modification Program.

The program was designed in response to the recent financial crisis. Its goal is to help homeowners who can no longer make their monthly financial payments. 

A spokesperson for the bank said its hope is to modify more than 60,000 mortgages by the end of September.

41-year-old Iowa business files for Chapter 11

A business in Hiawatha has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. A'Hearn Plumbing & Heating, a 41-year-old full-service mechanical contractors, provides plumbing heating, and ventilation services. 

The president of the company said the bankruptcy filing will give the company an opportunity to reorganize its debt and consolidate its business. In its bankruptcy filing, the company lists its assets and debts at $2 million and $10 million, respectively.
