Wells Fargo & Co. completed 33,172 trial and final modifications of home loans in the month of August. The completion represents a 64-percent increase for the month as part of the Home Affordable Modification Program.

The program was designed in response to the recent financial crisis. Its goal is to help homeowners who can no longer make their monthly financial payments.

A spokesperson for the bank said its hope is to modify more than 60,000 mortgages by the end of September.
