What is a mechanic’s lien?

Despite the name, mechanic’s liens are usually owned by construction companies, subcontractors, and providers of building materials. When a business hires a company to construct or repair their property, the company will typically take a lien on the property as protection against unpaid bills. If the business fails to pay the construction company what it is owned, they can use the lien to force the business to auction off the property and repay them.
