Iowa Child Labor Laws
Depending upon the nature of your business, it may be more efficient and suitable to employ young workers
for the accomplishment of certain tasks. For example, you may not have a need for a full-time workforce
of adults, or you may have a company whose products and services are tied to a seasonal cycle and so
the need for workers may fluctuate considerably. Whereas many adult workers are seeking to meet the
financial demands of independent living, most minor workers are simply hoping to obtain some discretionary
income or to make a specific purchase so they are more eager to accept such scattered hours of employment.
If you are going to employ minors in your company, then you must adhere to Iowa’s child labor laws or
else you will face substantial fines and penalties. Contact the Des Moines business lawyers of LaMarca Law Group, P.C., at (877) 327-2600 to discuss your situation with one of our skilled and experienced attorneys.
Child Labor and Hour Limitations
There are a number of important rules and regulations governing the acceptable use of minor employees,
but some of the easiest to grasp are those pertaining to the number of hours that a minor can work and
the hours during which they can work. Minors are prohibited from engaging in certain kinds of work altogether,
so that is something that you must also take into account. The minimum age at which a worker can obtain
a work permit is 14, and the following limitations only apply to workers under the age of 16:
- When school is not in session (summer, winter, and other weeklong vacations) a child may work 8 hours
per day with a maximum of 40 hours per week
- When school is in session a child may work a maximum of 4 hours per day and 28 hours per week
- From Labor Day through May 31 a child cannot work between 7:00 PM and 7:00 AM
- From June 1 through Labor Day a child cannot work between 9:00 PM and 7:00 AM
